It's one of those things that if a replacement front bubble were to fall in my lap, I'd build the needed section to support the hinge. :) I'd almost be tempted to scratch build one, but the thought of vacuforming a sheet of acrylic that large and 1/2" thick to boot would be one hell of a task. g. -- Proud owner of F-15C 80-0007 http://www.f15sim.com - The only one of its kind. http://www.diy-cockpits.org/coll - Go Collimated or Go Home. Message-ID: <20121101230446.UVDP2.8662.imail@fed1rmwml214> I was chatting with my dad the other day, who is an instructor at FlightSafety. His facility has been updating a number of their sims, and have a few fairly new sims in place. A couple years ago they did a major update on their Learjet 20-series sims....my dad informed me that now instead of a bunch of big ol' mainframes, the 20-series sim pretty much has a huge wad of wire bundles that just plug into expansion cards on a little PC or two (not surprising, considering the relative simplicity of this sim compared to its brethren). So the other day, I asked him if he knew anything of the software or operating systems FlightSafety is using. He replied "I don't know, but I keep seeing the Redhat logo pop up on screens in the sim computer room." It would appear that FlightSafety is running their sims on Linux. :) Now I don't know to what extent Linux pervades.....I am reasonably certain that the Vital visual systems, for instance, use some proprietary OS (though I would not be surprised if it's Unix-based). Having been 100% Linux-based on my sim since its initial design phase, I can tell you it makes a wonderfully simple, stable, and flexible platform for doing a serious, multi-computer/networked flight simulator. It's also an ideal programming/development platform, if you're rolling your own code. The only problem I have with using Linux is that the video drivers are WAAAY behind current releases for Windows. Additionally, the only sim choices you have are FlightGear (Free!) and X-Plane. You can't leverage the huge amount of tech and goodies built for MSFS. Nvidia has excellent support for Linux, although it's a closed source/proprietary driver (more an idealistic issue than a practical one). I have long since given up ATI in Linux....actually I have long since given up ATI period, far too many bugs and problems. Anyways, what cards have you tried? Perhaps if I were on the latest video card technology I would see an issue (running a 9800 GT right now), although like I said, Nvidia is pretty great about supporting Linux, at least for their video drivers. Are there features you are seeing in Windows video drivers that the Linux counterparts lack? > You're using FlightGear, right? Nope, X-Plane all the way.....while I love the concept, FlightGear has always felt a little too immature for me (although I know the flight model is very advanced and extensible at this point). One huge factor is that the graphics seem rougher, and the various parts of a scene seem less well-integrated than X-Plane. X-Plane has always had extremely solid, believable graphics (albeit simpler in the older days). And with version 10, it's just getting crazy. As far as MSFS, I have seen some sims running MSFS and I have come to the `conclusion that even X-Plane 9 has actually outpaced MSFS in terms of graphics quality, even when detail is not as dense. Now with X-Plane 10, it would appear that Austin has pretty much blown MSFS away. As far as hardware and software options, I would have to agree that COTS hardware support for MSFS is more abundant than for X-Plane. But that is changing as more vendors recognize X-Plane's rising status (and the relative death of MSFS as an evolving platform, at least for now). The software situation is a little better, with lots of people making all sorts of interesting things with the X-Plane SDK (which seems to be a better development platform than FSUIPC, which never really got official MS support AFAIK, and was most certainly not developed in-house like the X-Plane SDK was). A great example is Pilot Edge, which Justin just pointed me to a few days ago: http://www.pilotedge.net/ It was not made by the X-Plane community, but has full X-Plane support. But, for my sim at least, most of the stuff I'm doing is better with non-"off the shelf" solutions anyway. Most of the flight sim-specific hardware on the market (like OpenCockpits boards) aren't exactly what I need, and are far more expensive than what I can roll on my own with Arduino, generic joystick controllers, even Phidgets (sometimes), and some custom code and simple custom circuits. Example: my "real" weather radar cost me only about $105 ($50 for the scrapped Bendix radar display, $15 for a heck-of-a-package-deal on the Arduino Uno clone, and $40 for the PS1 LCD screen). The display software took one afternoon and an evening to write, and the Arduino code was an easy after-work project one day. Add in a few more hours getting everything mounted into the Bendix unit....I learned stuff, and I had fun. Nothing like this even exists on the market, and the only products even close to it (CDUs, GPSs, etc) are upwards of $500. Finally, I can't say enough about the X-Plane SDK. It is a really friendly, stable, easy system to work within, and is VERY powerful. I could not do 75% of what I'm doing now without the SDK and my own custom software. With all that said, I do realize changing the simulator software on an operational sim is an enormous task, so I don't expect MSFS to go away anytime soon. Just curious Gene, what sort of MSFS-specific hardware and software solutions are you using on your sim? It seems like you fabricate/design/code/ShopBot a whole lot of your gear. :) Matt From phoenixcomm at gmail.com Sat Nov 3 07:23:15 2012 From: phoenixcomm at gmail.com (Cris Harrison) Date: Sat, 3 Nov 2012 09:23:15 -0500 Subject: [simpits-tech] Production Flight Sims Message-ID: Hi gang.. I have been involved with flight simulators since i worked a Interdata back in the mid and late 70s. Commercial / Military FS are in real time. The b52 sim @ Singer Link (Interdata 8/32) had a map / model on the wall with a flying camera. It used our own in-house real-time OS. While at Grumman, I worked on the X-29 sim (fixed base cockpit) It used Interdata then renamed Perkin Elmer and a newer version of the 8/32 and again their real-time OS. My partner Paul has also worked in FS & OSs since the 80's. Never have any of our discussions, ever came across MS anything including windows, except as workstations for the programmers. UNIX/Linux and or embedded variants, has a long history in FS and real-time work. The OS has not really changed much since System V came out in the mid 80's. yes there have be improvements, filesystems, etc. but you know an ls is still ls and ps is still ps. The user environment has not changed at all sh, bash, ksh, ftp, grep, vi, ect. Now ask youself how many times did the user environment change? lets see CP/M, DOS, (cant remember the name but it got sued by apple for icon infringement)Windows 1 - 3 et al., Windows for Workgroups, Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows Me (remember that POS), Vista, Windows XP (and count the variants), Windows 7, and now Windows 8. That is a moving target, and you have to support a Sim for maybe 10 years or more. And you also have to remember that Networking (Internet) was never built in to the OS untill very recent. I dont think they could spell Ethernet. I first Ethernet system that I ever put in was at Epitax in the mid 80's when I was at college. It was Ethernet on Thick Coax with transceivers with vampire taps. Cris H. With the new Rembrandt shading system, it looks really nice. My biggest issue with XP is that I can't drive three projectors with it from a single machine. Here is an updated video about the Air Force One replica that we put together in in 2008. We got a call and had had 6 weeks to find a fuslage, have it cut, then convert it. The plane was previously the Kerry/Edwards Presidential campain jet. Just before retirement the plane carried the Lakers team for a championship game. We found notes about the game written by team members as well as other NBA items. ? The actual conversion was finished in 4 weeks. The last four years it has been on tour around the USA and has been visited by thousands. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SyA4btDyYhY&feature=player_embedded -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: <20121117045235.HNM52.81989.imail@fed1rmwml207> Well it's 3:30am and I know I should be in bed, but......I have FINALLY overcome a hurdle I have been trying to tackle since early September! I was not happy with all my sim's audio (nav signals, marker beacons, comms, etc) being piped through the main speakers, especially since I will be using headsets. So, I picked up a Collins audio panel over a year ago from a poor Navion that had a hangar fall on it ($10, I love ebay). It's just a basic piece of audio equipment, with a few neat tricks. Of course, each nav signal has its own channel on the audio panel....nav1/2, comm 1/2, ADF, DME, marker beacons, all can be switch to mic/headset, cabin speaker, or simply off. Also, if there is a nav signal coming through and then something comes on one of the comms, the nav signal fades a bit...a nice touch that I wanted to have working in my sim. The only practical solution, of course, is to completely kill all the nav audio generated by the sim itself (X-Plane in my case), and write my own nav tone software on a completely separate computer. While the programming side of it is actually not too difficult in theory, getting the goods in place to actually make it work has proven quite a mountain to climb. I finally came across a sound library the other night that I was able to successfully install and address each of the five sound cards in my audio PC (an old Dell GX260 with lots of PCI slots). The past couple nights, I have been digging into the custom software itself. And tonight.....SUCCESS! I am getting a "new" Morse code signal from my custom software, on the sound card I select. This means I can wire each card to a channel on the audio panel and get my Morse code (or marker beacon, or whatever else I want) through that channel, and that channel only! Oh, and each "radio" is running in a separate thread, which means any blocking calls to the audio library don't matter...any and all radios can sing away at the same time without any interference or delays. :) And for a bonus? Well, since I now have TOTAL control over EVERY aspect of the navigational sounds, I am able to lengthen out the Morse tones and their intermediate silences, just like most real navaids do (in order to help us poor non-Morse-reading pilots, I suppose!). It sounds beeeaaautiful.....I just spent a couple minutes tuning different VORs (with my real Gables NAV control head, oh ya!) and listening to each tone, occasionally checking it against a print-out of Morse codes just to be sure. :) Matt From sander at vpilot.net Sat Nov 17 02:56:22 2012 From: sander at vpilot.net (sander at vpilot.net) Date: Sat, 17 Nov 2012 11:56:22 +0100 Subject: [simpits-tech] A hard-fought victory! Yep, 5 sound cards.....it's probably possible to utilize a couple more ports on each card (for ones that support 5.1 Dolby, anyways) and thus get 2 or 3 channels out of a single card, but it's not worth the trouble IMO. Plus I would probably be stuck only being able to play out of one output per card at once. Much simpler to just stick the "the green port" on each card, both channels (left/right) and wire one card per "radio" on the audio panel. I could almost use more, but 5 worked out OK...my audio panel has nav 1/2, ADF, DME, and marker beacons...that's 5 outputs, perfect! Of course it also has comm 1/2, but I'm going to probably be handling them separately, as I plan on using Pilot Edge ( http://www.pilotedge.net/ ) which I just found out about...apparently it actually reads the comm freq set in the sim and routes audio correctly based on that. Pretty cool! But at any rate, the only thing I might need a comm channel for besides that would be for pre-recorded "chatter". I can always use the audio on my instrument panel PC and wire that to comm 2, for instance, if I want chatter while flying offline. Matt ---- sander at vpilot.net wrote: > Awesome work! I finds all the cards for you, so all you have to do is use a software patchboard that connects the sources to the channel + I do slant range calculation on radios so if you car at NY - Kennedy you can hear LAX!! in Linux/Unix each card has it's own handle (just like opening a database). also I have a flight recorder which is time-stamped (on the same box) plus it since its part of my RSS or Radio Sub System it also controls various flags on the instruments via messages. I am basically just hooking everything into X-Plane's "brain" and spitting the data out to the appropriate places (example: rather than having my software look up what navaids are nearby or looking for marker beacons, I just let X-Plane tell me when it's picking up some sort of navaid, marker beacon, etc...ditto for most instrument flags). Seems like your approach is more comprehensive, and also probably better for using the system on multiple sim software packages? Mine is pretty unique to my sim, though I try to keep things reasonably portable and non-specific (but on my audio system, for instance, I don't have any auto-discovery code for the sound cards, they are hard-coded to that specific machine). Btw, somewhat unrelated but I noticed your post about Linux Mint network config issues. Mint is a great distro from what I've seen, but it's very feature-filled and "desktop'ish". What you experienced is exactly the kind of crap I've had to deal with on the more "feature-rich" help-me desktop distros. For the kind of work we're doing, might I suggest another distro? I'm 100% Slackware here, as it is a no-nonsense, vanilla, un-tweaked distro which actually uses a vanilla kernel straight from the tree, no funky distro-specific weirdness. Ditto for most of the included packages as well, there aren't really any special things done to original programs by the Slackware folks. I've heard Arch is good also, DSL is very light weight and simple, and of course there's always Linux From Scratch if you're really intrepid. :) Matt ---- Cris Harrison wrote: > Mat > Congrats! > Seems you took a page out of my playbook, > phoenixcomm.wordpress.com/2012/03/04/arinc-410-subsystem-audio-routing I > have the Morse Code stuff done with a database (all of the radios & navaids > from the FAA; which i take an dump into my mysql db), i can get items from > the db by location and or station id. + tones (inner, outer, etc.), and 5 > audio cards running on an un-modified system.. I am converting my sim over to X-Plane and although I hate to start from scratch as far as converting all my hardware over (Ruscool IO cards, GoFlight radios, FlightIllusion Engine stack), I feel the better graphics and flight dynamics are worth the effort. I'd also like to pipe my COM/NAV sounds to a separate system. I'm not too concerned about the subtleties but just having those sounds separate from the airplane would be nice. Yes I use Mint for development. I added the Cinnamon desktop to it as well. It runs my Eclipse development environment as well. This way I don't have to re-target my stuff from windows, and it uses GCC under the hood! I use VIM, Eclipse or Notepad+ as my editors. With Eclipse it cuts my development & test time down. Ok.. instead of hard coding your audio cards, you should have used* ALSA Advanced Linux Sound Architecture*, It was designed to do handle multiple sound cards for you (easy peasy), It is included in most distros, and therefore its *portable*. (and I hate redesigning a wheel, that works fine, that is!) Now for moving all that sound around.. again look around for ALSA aware programs and you will find Jack . Again portability is the key, and BTW don't forget our friend the wheel. Portability is defined as what hell happens when you blow up the motherboard or audio cards. I don't want to re-code. Do you? About distros: It dosent mater. Just make sure the feature set you need is there. I have used Sun Open Desktop (on Solaris), GENTO (way too hard to configure), Red Hat on my server in the clouds (really junk), OpenBSD (had my firewall on it!!), Ubunto (not that impressed but much better), and then Mint12 (I like it, yes its from the Ubunto tree), and then there are smaller OS of course. Like my Beagle Bone.. boots to Linux (Agstom) with a Cloud9 desktop, and the TI Launchpad cards (less than $20, and crushes the Arduino) and they give you the tools they have a 32bit Sellaris card that I am working with now! I also have a 68k VME box that has a shit load of I/O but has to load very old kernels.. So I build the solfware here in Mint but target them with a 68k backend on GCC. oh one more thought check out you can build your own light weight distros... (I forgot the tool that I have used (brain fart!) If you need some help drop me a line. Upwards and Onwards Cris H. In-Reply-To: Message-ID: <20121118200050.AC3W3.165513.imail@fed1rmwml107> Funny you should mention ALSA...I am actually using PyAlsa (the "good" one..there are like 3 projects by that name), which is a Python layer to ALSA. It's nice because the author has taken a lot of the mystery and undocumented weirdness out of the works (did not port over the entire ALSA system, in fact he readily admits that he only understands about half of it due to its complexity and lack of documentation). My "hardcoded" bit is literally 5 lines referencing the ALSA names of the sound cards...so yes, I will have to change code if I ever switch stuff to a different computer or use different sound cards, but it's literally a 5 minute fix. :) I have not gotten into JACK much but I am curious about it, I may dig into it a little deeper to see if it might help me in some way. Though at this point my actual audio needs are so simple, I think PyAlsa is all I need. Perhaps it will be useful if/when I look into replacing X-Plane's environmental/engine sound system with my own.... :) Matt ---- Cris Harrison wrote: > Mat, > I did a lot of ground work for a Radio Sub System, and I did talk about in > my blog.. > Yes I use Mint for development. Even v9 has beat out MSFS in many major areas already, and XP10 will blow it out of the water! Switching sim software certainly is a big deal, but do not despair if you are using off-the-shelf stuff.....check out X-Plane support for your existing gear. GoFlight, for instance, supports X-Plane last I checked. Not sure about RusCool, but the engine stack probably works with X-Plane too. Vendors are starting to recognize X-Plane's growing popularity, especially with MSFS essentially being dead at FSX now. If you only want all your nav/comm audio separate (and don't care about using a real audio panel and separating each nav/comm signal), you won't necessarily need custom software. Run a second X-Plane computer networked to your main X-Plane unit. Make all the WAV files related to nav/comm audio on your main PC silent, and do the opposite on the secondary PC (ergo, make silent its engine/environment WAVs). You can even hook your real aviation headset into your PC if you've got one...the headphone part connects directly with a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter. The mic part has an impedance mismatch with a PC. but there is a simple circuit you can make that uses a 9v battery to get things matched up pretty close...there's an old article on FlightSim.com with parts lists and schematics on how to do this. I'm going to be using an actual aviation intercom, with its mic output connected to the "headset adapter" I built from FlightSim.com's article. With a relay hooked to the PTT side, I will even get the open-mic/zero-squelch effect that a real system gets when you hit the transmit button. :) Matt ---- Ray wrote: > Matt, > > I'm very interested in your work on the Linux platform and your sound > setup. LOL, actually if I start moving over to analog instruments, I may end up with a REAL 400hz signal mixing in with my intercom. :) That's actually not a bad idea now that you mention it.....I do seem to recall a bit of high-frequency "noise" on some of the bigger aircraft I've flown. It's doable. USB sound cards are pretty cheap these days, and definitely an option if I really need more channels. While researching sound libraries, I happened across a number of folks who are using USB sound cards with ALSA successfully (including Raspberry PI folks, and I have a PI I am thinking of doing something with....). Yep. There's also a sound library that FlightGear uses (might be ALSA, not sure) that you might want to check out. It does some really cool things. One of the reasons that X-Plane isn't my sim of choice is the poor out of the box support for very wide displays. With FS9/FSX and Prepar3D, you can create custom views that allow a good 180+ degree wrap-around display using a single computer. In order to achieve the same result in X-Plane, you have no choice but to go to multiple computers. That really drives up the cost of the whole simulator. FlightGear also does an excellent job with wide-screen displays from a single host. v3.0 is coming out in Feb! g. -- Proud owner of F-15C 80-0007 http://www.f15sim.com - The only one of its kind. http://www.diy-cockpits.org/coll - Go Collimated or Go Home. I want to love FlightGear, I really do....it would be the ultimate DIY flight sim solution. But I just can't. There's something about the graphics and terrain, the overall look of the sim, right down to the runway/airport environment, that just seems to kill the illusion. It doesn't seem as solid and as natural as X-Plane. Just look at some of the mountainscapes in X-Plane (even v9, but especially 10), or the cloud layers and weather effects...it's one of the things that makes X-Plane so good. On a full flight sim with a big screen or wrap-around visuals, it also fits in perfectly with the "big sim" look. I have tried FG several times over the years (in fact a version from 2010 is still on one of my PCs here), maybe I should give v3 a shot when it comes out. As I recall the big issue with X-Plane and big displays is the way it falls apart at wide FOVs....what's interesting is that while working on my own sim, I noticed that v9 has a TON of options for projection systems if you have the commercial key...cylindrical, dome projection, vertical and horizontal offsets, differential FOVs.........I wonder if the large FOV problem is fixed with a commercial key? Anyone want to spend $700 on a key and find out? :) At the moment I am not too concerned about the cost, in fact it has always been my preference to focus on one PC per display...seems like the least I can do to maximize frame rates. I am running v9 at fairly good graphics settings on a 4+ year old Core 2 Duo with 2g RAM, and a 9800GT that I picked up on ebay for $40, and getting 80+ FPS most of the time, never less than 40 or so (except near extremely detailed airports). Systems like this can be had for almost nothing now if you know where to look, cheaper than one really good PC for single-PC visuals. I am going to play with v10 and large FOVs....if it's still hosed, I wonder if Austin would be responsive to feature/fix requests on this? It *would* make setup and config a lot easier when I build my cylindrical screen. In-Reply-To: Message-ID: <20121120215142.OLI27.185613.imail@fed1rmwml205> Actually there is a function in PyAlsa that returns all the handles for the sound cards. :) I could actually write code to automagically assign cards to radio channels, but they would be totally random....there would be no way for the computer to "know" what channels on the audio panel each card is connected to. Also worth mentioning is that I am not even running X on this PC...in fact, there is no monitor or keyboard connected, everything is through SSH and Samba. :) I've had too much crap with GUI tools doing weird stupid stuff over the years, everything is direct config files for me now. I've been doing all my coding on a "development" PC, and mounting file shares to each PC onto this one. That way I ALWAYS have at least two copies of everything, even when I am lax in backup procedures. It also makes coding a lot more fun...no hopping back and forth from one PC to the next, or using a KVM switch. My CNC router has been up and running since August. On top of that, my wife and I made a trip to S. California to pick up a converted CNC mini mill (a Sieg X3). While there, the seller of the mill showed me a 9"x20" metal working lathe that he started the CNC conversion on but never finished due to buying a full CNC lathe. I bought it and the conversion parts for a song. With a bit more tooling I think I could build you a F15 cockpit. I also have run out of excuses for not starting my own cockpit. geneb wrote: >http://www.ebay.com/itm/Aircraft-display-bezel-unknown-verion-of-F-15-MPCD-MFD-/160922497143?pt=Motors_Aviation_Parts_Gear&hash=item2577ba7077&vxp=mtr > >This is an interesting variant on the MPCD. Message-ID: I'm spending some time tying up the lose ends on the 109F/X controls - I haven't done much with it since I replaced the pots with my diy hall effect sensors. The silly things won't calibrate under Windows XP and my Plasma MM2. I've tested the devices themselves and they range from 0..5V as you go from one extreme to the other - it's about 180 degrees of usable range - I'm only using about the middle 90 or so. (45 each way) When it calibration mode on XP, I view the raw data to watch for spikes. I don't have a spiking issue, but it appears I've got weird WRAP issue. With the hall effect sensor at a know position (centered @ 2.5V), the joystick calibration window reads about 960 or so. I would expect it to read about 500-512. When I move the control one direction, it quickly hits 1023 and wraps back to zero. It will do this at least twice if not three times before I hit the end of the travel. It does the same thing going the other way. Any suggestions or has my Plasma MM2 packed it in? One thing I can think of: with a traditional 100k pot, for instance, don't you usually get *some* voltage at the low end, since it's just a big resistor and not actually opening or grounding the circuit? Theoretically it still shouldn't act the way it's acting for you, but this *is* Windows we're talking about, maybe the unusually low voltage reading from the Hall is confusing it. :P I would plug it into another PC and see what you get, or boot your current PC into a Linux boot CD and see if it will calibrate in Linux. Linux seems to be a little more tolerant of non-conventional joystick-style controls than Windows. Oh, and try different jumper settings on the Plasma...you can change the filtering level, as well as the resolution if I remember correctly (my Plasma V2 manual is not on this PC). Ie check the spec. if the tests differ you might have a badly trimmed pot. (it happens) some of the pots are real crappy!! remember they where for a game CHEAP!! I changed out my pots for older Alan Bradley type J they are the best! For those of you who dont know look here: http://www.talonix.com/shop/item.aspx?itemid674 Upwards and Onward enjoy Cris H.
