I found that Libre Office paragraph numbering was more that a little flaky. So I tried to get Ventua Publisher to work under Windows 7. After numerous attempts, and screwing around with computability mode, I remembered that I had Virtual Box installed as I had to write some Android code. So I fired up Virtual Box and created a new machine and installed XPpro, my black edition, in about 10 or 15 minutes.. and then shared my windows 7 file system on XP (they show up as network drives), and then loaded Ventura... Life is now good.. I just wish Ventura could read my odt files... Oh I was day dreaming. Now saying all this why... well instead of building a new machine to run your radio/radar subsystem just build a Virtual Computer... Where did you get the LCD from? What's the resolution? You might get a better visual result if you were to place a lightly smoked acrylic bezel in front of the LCD. g. -- Proud owner of F-15C 80-0007 http://www.f15sim.com - The only one of its kind. http://www.diy-cockpits.org/coll - Go Collimated or Go Home. Where did you get the LCD from? What's the resolution? Thanks! It's a PlayStation 1 portable LCD (the "official" Sony one). I picked it up on ebay years ago for like $40. Native res is 640x480, but I am using the composite input, so it's more like, what, 480x320 or something? A number of folks have soldered VGA connectors to the screen's board and then changed video timings so they could actually run true 640x480, with mixed results...I tried this and had no luck. But as it happens, the lower quality and very slight "shimmer"/flicker effect of the composite signal makes it look just like a CRT radar of the 80's. :) > You might get a better visual result if you were to place a lightly smoked > acrylic bezel in front of the LCD. Great idea! As a matter of fact, I have exactly that in front of the PS1 screen. :) It's an almost-clear (slightly smoked) piece of transparent plastic that was originally made to go in a document binder. I kept a bunch of sheets of the stuff to use on model airplanes as windows, but it also works well on the radar and my Tracor CDU (gives a better look, and protects the screen). Also, the metal borders of the screen are just within the open area of the Bendix bezel, I covered them with electric tape....the plastic "screen" gives a uniform surface so the tape is nearly invisible. Combined with the slightly low-quality RCA connection, the whole thing looks very convincing and old-school. :) Matt From dabigboy at cox.net Mon May 7 18:03:40 2012 From: dabigboy at cox.net (dabigboy at cox.net) Date: Mon, 7 May 2012 18:03:40 -0700 Subject: [simpits-tech] Using Virtual Box Message-ID: <20120507210340.D1CAI.615263.imail@fed1rmwml302> ---- Cris Harrison wrote: > Hey guys, > I just added a post to my blog about using Virtual Box from Sun/Oracle. Yep, me and my Linux buddy at work have been using VB for a little while now. It's great for testing out Windows apps or doing cross-platform development. He was using it to test out Vista, XP, and Win7 clients with a Linux domain controller. I use it mostly for running my old and trusty Paint Shop Pro 7 software. But if you get into anything requiring serious graphics performance or hardware-accelerated graphics, virtualization is not going to serve you well.
