Care to post your course notes? :) Learning G-Code is a good thing, but from what I've learned, 99% of the people involved in CNC don't hand-code any more. They use software packages that create the code for them. For example, I use VCarve Pro for all my flat pattern & 2.5D stuff. I just pick which post-processor I want and it spits out the right code. I don't have to worry about tool diameter compensation or any of that. It's very nice. > And why oh why do NC controllers have to beep so freakin LoUd !? > Because they know you had a hangover? :) g. -- Proud owner of F-15C 80-0007 http://www.f15sim.com - The only one of its kind. http://www.simpits.org/geneb - The Me-109F/X Project ScarletDME - The red hot Data Management Environment A Multi-Value database for the masses, not the classes. http://www.scarletdme.org - Get it _today_! Message-ID: Wayne & I got the bugs ironed out of the system we developed in order to manage the collimating mirror shape. This new method allows us to use a less than perfectly sealed mirror chassis. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QC7H61palXs The green colored pot with the knob on it is used to control the distance that the mirror is away from the IR sensor head. The circuit that Wayne designed worked out really well. The next iteration of it will use some 555 timer magic in order to directly drive the servo and take the Arduino out of the loop. By moving the bleed-air gate inline with the hose, we avoid the sound issue that was being caused by having the gate on the back of the mirror chassis. Moving the dust collector farther away will reduce the ambient noise even further. Next week should see us assembling the parts for the new mirror that I've already been able to cut - there's only 1 sheet of parts left to cut. It's gonna be neat. From jjmessenger at yahoo.com Sun Feb 13 11:25:12 2011 From: jjmessenger at yahoo.com (Justin Messenger) Date: Sun, 13 Feb 2011 11:25:12 -0800 (PST) Subject: [simpits-tech] A great basic controller card package to build a functional sim Message-ID: <617740.3583.qm@web111503.mail.gq1.yahoo.com> Hey guys, Ive been working with a new card (to me) for flightsim and Ive been able to do some very?cool things with it. The programing takes time and is not particularly easy (for me), However it is worth the effort. This USBOutputs card has 64 outputs that are designed to control indicator lights. Im also using it to control DC motors for a custom seat force feedback system. Im?using 12vDC which?is the voltage of the motors I use. For the?indicator lights Im using 12v?LEDs and some 12v light bulbs, though you have to make sure your light bulbs pull less than 500ma which is the card's amp limit per an output. To control some 28v functions (My F-4 Phantom landing gear and flaps indicators) I will use relays that are triggered by this card. This card will?also run 5 pots! For many of you this is all of the pots you will need.?If you use the Hagstom KE-108 card for your?toggle switches,?the Hagstom KE-108?can control an additional four pots.?Nine potentiometers are more than enough pots for any fighter sim. So if you are using these two cards there is no reason to purchase a separate pot controller card. So with this combo you get, USBOutputs card (These outputs are triggered by flightsim, so your indicator lights are controlled by computer data. There is also a program for it to read data from Falcon 4.0, but I have not tried it) * 64?light?light outputs (you can provide any voltage from 0 to 50 volts. Im using 12v for my system) * 5 potentiometers? Price 55.00EUR?(In the US this ends up being about $100.00 USD with shipping) http://www.opencockpits.com/catalog/electronic-cards-iocards-outputs-lampsleds-c-21_44.html You will also need a power supply, I use a computer power supply for 12vDC You will also need FSUIPC to allow the USBOutputs card to communicate with flight simulator http://www.schiratti.com/dowson.html KE-108 keyboard emulator * 108 toggle switch imputs (These can be programmed as either keyboard keystrokes or joystick buttons) * 4 potentiometers * 2 rotary encoder switch inputs * Trackball and Spinner ports to generate custom mouse action KE-USB108 Price - $169.95 ea. You will also want three IOX36 Breakout Boards for the KE-USB108 PRICE - $15.95 ea. http://www.hagstromelectronics.com/products/ke_usb108.html For approx $320.00 this combination provides a powerful and flexible?interface for your cockpit. Gonna fight those H-Bridges every step of the way. The Serial link seems a more elegant solution. (That's where i was going originally before the thin trail of smoke erupted.) The PWM outputs I *think* are frequency-adjustable, but hadn't gotten there yet. (And I may still pursue that route) One problem I ran into with the original circuit was that the Freq-to-Aircore driver chips had a non-linear response curve. (More like a logarithmic response curve and I would probably need to build reference tables to remove that log behavior) Gotta crack a few eggs to make an omelet I guess. Now, for the serial plan... What I hope for is to have a single data line shared by all CS4122 chips , with multiple CLK lines. Deathtoll is sitting at 71 currently, but is sure to rise as they get through some of destroyed buildings. Luckily my family (including my 3 week old!), my workmates and I are all safe, many many others are not. My home is in a "green" zone meaning we have 2 out of 3 essentials, (we have water and power but no sewage), while over 80 percent of the city is without water. I have some nice security cam footage, which should be hitting youtube soon, of what the workshop at work went through... link shortly. When the quake struck I was is a 70 year old concrete storage building having a look at a sim we just bought, but managed to run out the small access door quicker than my 26 year old workmate... still some speed in these 40 year old bones yet! I was introduced to it by Robert Reed and have since gutted my EPIC USB hardware and replaced it with the RusCool cards. They are pricey, but in my case I had to look at the time I spent programming the EPIC. I finally determined that it would never be finished. With the Ruscool cards, you do nothing more than wire it up, use a GUI to say "Turn this LED on when this offset = " Granted you can't do complex logic like a 777 Radio Management panel, but Ruscool really got me moving again on my F16. Even better (Only if you used EPIC), the same logic interface applies to both EPIC and Ruscool. With minimal planning I was able to rip out EPIC but leave in all the breakout boards and plug the Ruscool cards directly into the breakout boards. I know this sounds like a plug.... I was just that impressed with the Ruscool cards. Somewhat pricey but after I looked at the opportunity costs (The cost of me flailing away at EPIC code vs. a few days of rewiring and some GUI work) the cost became secondary. I2C right off the board and Ethernet & USB via shields. Ethernet Shield: http://www.sparkfun.com/products/9026 (also stocked by others) Arduino based autopilot for UAVs : http://www.sparkfun.com/products/8785 The new Arduino Uno uses an ATMega8u2 instead of the FTDI serial chip for it's main interface. This chip can be reprogrammed to emulate any kind of USB HID device instead of being just a serial port. If you want to connect a USB device to an Arduino, you can use the USB Shield here: http://www.sparkfun.com/products/9947 so you can hook up webcams, keyboards, joysticks, etc. to a "can't do much" Arduino. If you're into the .Net compact framework, you can get any one of the FEZ boards (I have a FEZ Panda: http://www.sparkfun.com/products/10146) and program your device in VB.Net or C#. The FEZ line has quite a few really cool boards. Check out http://www.tinyclr.com/compare/ for a side by side comparison of them. The FEZ Panda and FEZ Domino can use pretty much any shield designed for the regular Arduino. I don't mind you knocking the Arduino, but saying it "can't do much" has squat to do with the Arduino and everything to do with how you look at it.
