I also know it has data extraction capabilities, though I don't know how extensive. Check out http://www.eechcentral.com/ for more info. I think it could serve the sim nicely. You hear that sound? It's my forehead slamming into my desk top. Repeatedly. You can get an Arduino Duemilanove from eBay for about $20. More if you buy one from those crazed digital crack dealers over at SparkFun (http://www.sparkfun.com, $29.95 + shipping). You can stack two of those Centipede boards on to a single Arduino board, resulting in 128 channels of I/O (mix and match in any form) for less than $75. Assembled. I'm going to shelve work on my 16 channel board - there's no real point to it any longer. I'll likely consume the boards on various random projects. I'm going to order a couple of those Centipede boards and update the firmware I wrote for the Gazoutta16 to work with it. Note that if you also go get a Mux Shield and another Arduino board (the Mux Shield and Centipede both use pins 4 and 5 so you can't share them on a single Arduino) you can get 48 10 bit analogs going too. Using PPJoy (creates virtual joystick devices) and it's accompanying SDK, you can pretty much do whatever you like at prices that essentially take the bar to entry and run it through a wire extrusion die a few hundred times. :) g. -- Proud owner of F-15C 80-0007 http://www.f15sim.com - The only one of its kind. http://www.simpits.org/geneb - The Me-109F/X Project ScarletDME - The red hot Data Management Environment A Multi-Value database for the masses, not the classes. http://www.scarletdme.org - Get it _today_! The chips the Centipede uses can't direct-drive loads greater than what an LED would typically consume (20mA each - the chip has a max of 24mA, per pin). However, they can source enough current at 5VDC to easily drive what is known as a "logic-level" MOSFET. This means that you can build a little circuit to use MOSFETs to drive relays, motors, incandescent bulbs, or other devices that require more than 20mA at 5VDC to run. A good choice for driving lamps is a BS270. It comes in a TO-92 package and is dirt cheap. They'll handle 400mA, which is perfect for lamps and can handle up to 60VDC. If you have a really high power need, the IRL620 comes in a TO-220 package and will handle up to 10A at (I think) over 100VDC. Here's a nice description of using a MOSFET as a switch, using the BS270 part mentioned earlier: http://brunningsoftware.co.uk/FET.htm g. Message-ID: I found out yesterday that you can use the Centipede Shield in conjunction with the MUX Shield that SparkFun sells. The MUX Sheild provides 48 analog or digital inputs or digital outputs. This means that with a standard Arduino board, you can have 128 purely digital I/O lines and 48 analogs on one device. As soon as my Centipede Shields arrive I'll take a picture of the stack so you can see what it looks like. There's a virtual joystick out there called "PPJoy" (http://ppjoy.blogspot.com/) that you can use to "emulate" joystick devices. The machine will think it's talking to a standard joystick. This is what JoyMapper uses (http://www.assembla.com/wiki/show/lightningstools) for interfacing PHCC hardware. Because the author was kind enough to create a .Net version of the PPJoy SDK, it will be fairly easy to interface the serial protocol I use with the Arduino with any simulator. If there is enough interest in this kind of thing, I'd be happy to create a simpits-arduino list. g. I'm once again an active real-world pilot (though strictly recreational), and the flight simulator bug is itching me like crazy. :) I'm soooooo close to finally making a full simulator.....unfortunately I don't quite have the space for one right now. But, I'm narrowing down my ideas for a visual system, and finally I have developed the skills to program pretty much anything my simulator will ever need. I have a functional, network-connected instrument display program running now, I'm mostly just adding instruments and capabilities to it at this point (like Phidgets support). It runs stand-alone on its own PC (or multiple PCs), and the host flight simulator computer sends data to the instrument computer(s) via UDP (stupid fast, with only enough error-checking required to keep the client software from crashing over corrupted packets). This will give me a nice, 100% customer glass display. I do have a problem though: the heart of my simple control functionality, my Beta Innovations Plasma 2 board, has died. I know the guy is no longer in business, I was wondering if anyone would happen to have Beta Innovations items for sale or trade? I will eventually be leaning heavily on Phidgets, but that Plasma board was just so good for what it was designed for, I really can't see replacing it with anything I could cook up with a Phidgets I/O kit or customer interface board. The nifty HOTAS modes, great noise filtering, adjustable precision....it was really the perfect board for my needs. And there were a few other Beta Innovations products I wouldn't mind having as well. Anyways, if anyone has any Beta Innovations stuff you'd consider letting go, please let me know. Thanks! Last time I used a spaceball was on a unigraphics unix box late 90's. yes it is very nice to use. Just don't use drawing programs enough to buy one, although the usb version might be worth while. My problem with any of the drawing programs is I like entering the points themselves to define everything. Especially if it's something I'm trying to replicate in the drawing as opposed to just slapping some objects on the screen to create some kind of abstract art. -----Original Message----- From: Gene Buckle To: Simulator Cockpit Builder's List Sent: Tue, Sep 28, 2010 10:47 am Subject: Re: [simpits-tech] 3D tools... How many people here use 3D modeling tools and _don't_ use some kind of auxillary input device along with the mouse? I'm using a SpaceBall 5000 that I picked up a few years ago that's GREATLY reduced the amount of wrist & arm stress I used to experience while working with just the mouse alone. There are a number of companies that sell the USB version of the SpaceBall 5000 and the newer SpacePilot. If you do any 3D modeling, I highly recommend getting one of these things. The drivers are available from the 3dConnexion website (http://www.3dconnexion.com). Avoid the serial version of the SpaceBall - the current driver has no support for them. The Vista driver works with Windows 7 as well. g. _______________________________________________ Simpits-tech mailing list Simpits-tech at simpits.org http://www.simpits.org/mailman/listinfo/simpits-tech To unsubscribe, please see the instructions at the bottom of the above page.
