I've been playing around a bit with that Aeron
flightsim Gene posted a while back.
(http://aeron.sourceforge.net/index.php if you lost
the link) It's actually pretty neat. The website
hasn't been updated to reflect this fact, but Version
2.2 is actually out now, so there's some basic
airplane models, which really makes the experience
much better.

Since it's open source the possibilities are pretty
limitless. The idea that keeps running through my
head right now is adding in several WWII fighters,
multiple monitor support and some very basic gauge
driving, then building one of Gene's simkits. Tow
that thing around to airshows and let people taste
some simple air combat.

Anyway, definitely worth a look, despite how basic it
is. I'm downloading Tacview right now for additional
fun. :)

I was finally able to get the simpits.org server replaced today.  The 
speed problem with the Wordpress blogs was directly related to the fact 
that they were on a 7 year old machine with 512MB of RAM. :)

Brian, it is a very nice simulator.  It reminds me a lot of Eyal 
Lebedinsky's(sp?) Fly8 simulator.  Eyal's sim was all wireframe graphics. 
Very cool though!

I think that this would be a great project to showcase the simple to build 
instrument's in Mike Powell's book Building Simulated Aircraft 
Instrumentation.  I plan on building a set of them myself for the '109 
cockpit this summer.  His second book is nearly done and has even more 
goodies. :)

Is the author of Aeron still on this list?  I wonder how hard interfacing 
to external programs would be...

ive been playing with it too.
iam running it on my basic flightsim cockpit, my 4 year old grandson is
having a cool time with it.

Hello from sunny Scotland !!

I'm trying to set up flight sim x to start up with a specific view on the
screen. As standard it starts up with the 3D cockpit but we just want the
cockpit view. Also the cockpit view shows the instruments and the yoke which
we don't want to be shown on the screen.

Does anyone know how to get FSX to start up with a specified view on screen?
I've tried messing about with the config file but I'm obviously not setting
the correct bits and strangely there isn't much info out there on the net.

Also how to people set FSX to show the instruments on a separate screen with
out having to mess around with the in-game settings each time?

I think I am not positive I read it in Volume one of his which
I purchased . I will look for it find the area involved and pass it
along to you either by email or snail mail .He not only mentioned
marine he mentioned Automotive too.

sorry, that's the basic reason I switched back to FS9.

for me, FSX is the VISTA  of simming.

i've got all views running on one computer using FS9. iam using a dual core
AMD 64 with MSI motherboard that supports multiple pci-e 16x video cards
with 4gb of memory. my scenery views are all on 3 X 22" widescreen LCD and
my instrument panel is on an HP 32" LCD with three dvi inputs.

no latency at all with the frame rate reliever FS9CFG.
 iam getting ground FPS of between 9 to 10 and 15 to 30 flying.

i dont see any advantage for FSX right now, maybe when the new generation
video cards with its on CPU is already in the market, that's when FSX can be
of any use.

I've had zero luck finding these via Google.  Help!

I was pointed to a number of Eaton vendors (the company that makes the 
switches I need) and I'm really hoping they're not going to try to ding me

Aye, some place/people are charging daft amounts for inexpensive items.
I'm after dual (concentric) encoders and although I know ALPS make them, I
can only find them on sim sites who want silly money.

All the vendors on the list are aerospace vendors.  Couple that with 
companies doing JIT manufacturing and it keeps the costs high.  Unless 
it's a commodity part, people don't manufacture to stock any longer.

I was looking for a "standard" Master Caution illuminated pushbutton a 
number of years ago.  Korry quoted me $1100.00 for *one*.  The reasoning 
was that they didn't have any in stock and would have to start the 
production line in order to build me one.  The only way to get a 
reasonable price would be to piggyback onto someone elses larger order.

FIOS says less than a second stopwatch says .835 seconds tried it 10 times

I used a company called Electric Switches 
http://www.electricswitches.com/gpage1.html
to order the special Eaton switch I needed. I placed the order and 
asked them to place it with Eaton, when they did their normal stock 
order. This delayed receiving the switch by about 60 days, but it 
also cut the price.

I've already ordered the switches I needed, thanks though.  The standard 
cap switches were obtained from two different sources.  The Honeywell 12TW 
mushroom cap switches may take more work.  We'll see. :)

hi Rick - just your regular rotary encoders for use with a hagstrom
wotsit. These are to drive radio frequency changers so I'm after the dual
concentric type.

Three of them also have the push button feature as well as dual concentric.
I believe they originally came from Leo Bodner's stable.

I have a lot of that stuff for sale. You should set up a classified/flea 
market/trading page Greg. (or maybe you have already)

So, I'm still using an X-36... Gameport version,
even. I know, talk about stone-age! I'm honestly
pretty sure I got this stick in high school (I'm 3
years out of college now, with a 5 year degree, so
that makes it at LEAST 8 years old...)

Truth be told, the stick still works GREAT (talk
about a fan for life... Saitek is awesome stuff!) But
the driver support.... well the stick is so old that
Saitek didn't worry about coming out with XP drivers
because it was already "too old" THEN. So now the
only option is a single private developer, who truth
be told has done a great job, but the latest versions
of the driver don't work for me, and since mine is an
apparently isolated case, he seems to not be
concerned with my problems... fair enough, no hard
feelings, he's only one man, and I'm only one
complaint...

Anywho, I've done some looking around, and I'm
getting myself an X-52 Pro. I can't wait. :) Anyone
here have experiences with the stick, things to watch
out for?

The best part... I even have my wife's blessing for
my new bit of shiny! It's like Christmas morning! :)

Hi, Brian.

i've burned out my 1st X-52, and am on my 2nd. it became "twitchy", 
which seemed a premature failure for a digital stick.

the programming software is pretty sophisticated, so there's a lot to 
learn to be effective with it. you won't have any problems there.

the only thing i don't like about the X52 is the centering. there are 
no "slots" in the middle of the x & y axis. this means you can't 
"feel" when you're in the center of either axis. if you want to stay 
centered, on (let's say) the roll axis, the stick won't tell you. i 
hope this makes sense.

centering is performed with a big, obvious spring at the base of the 
stick, which means that the tension is fixed. several of us have 
overcome the tension by tie-wrapping a coil or two of the spring to 
compress it, and lessen the tension. this lets you fly helicopters 
without lots of push-back.

last time i checked, there were problems supporting some of the 
sliders (rotary & linear controls) with their API. at least that's 
what a programmer claimed when adding X52 support with Orbiter.

i don't have the pro. i have the older "blue LED" version. since 
everything else i bought in that time-period was also blue, it fit right in.

anyways, you'll most likely enjoy it.

Have you checked out the new stick from Logitec?  It's a package that 
includes a FF stick, a dual throttle that's split like the F-15 & F/A-18 
and includes a set of rudder pedals.

There's a thread in the Pit Builder's forum over at SimHQ about it.

I hadn't. Looking for a split throttle had briefly
occurred to me, but I decided it wasn't really a
feature I felt I was lacking. And believe it or not
one of the nice things I'm looking forward to with
the X52 is the twist stick and being more or less rid
of my pedals. I don't find myself needing them that
much, and when I do the twist stick should do just
fine. Plus a major advantage is my 6-year-old will
now be able to fly helicopter games without my
assistance. So I may hang on to the set I've got for
when I'm feeling a need for a major realism fix, but
for the most part I think they'll stay tucked away.
Certainly not looking to buy a new set - the set I've
got is even older than my X36, and works even better! lol

The nice thing is from looking at it, the basic
ergonomics, layout and programming of the X52 is
going to be very familiar to me moving from the X36.
It gives me a lot of confidence in the product,
knowing A) My X36 has outlasted many, many computers
and B) They've taken an evolutionary approach to
making the controls, so by now they should have many
potential bugs worked out. Also C) I know I like the
look and feel of the basic product, and can use it
comfortably. Plus I see that the new stick has an
adjustable hand rest, which means I can probably
adjust it for my son, too, so that should be cool.

Now I just gotta wait for the dang thing to get here.
Amazon won't ship electronics to APO boxes (#@$(*ers)
so I'm sending it to my parents for them to send to
me.... Blech.

Why would Amazon not ship to an APO address with as many military as there is overseas, have they forgotten a market? Perhaps they just don't support the troops.

For those who're living overseas with APO/FPO addresses, and not being
able to order electronic stuff from particular online sites (such as
amazon), I'm not sure if you hear about www.apobox.com  

It is a private company that forwards packages sent via FedEx(tm),
UPS(tm), and DHL(tm) to military APO FPO DPO addresses overseas via the
US Post Office with additional fees.  That might be an alternate choice.

you should ask that on viperpit - especially craig or jay, which i think
both are on this list too.
basically what you need is an LVDT amp, which you can tune to output the
same as a pot.
try searching for ATA101 from schaevitz on ebay - they are there some time
and for not so much - i've seen some going for 30-40$

Thanks Ido - nothing there at the moment.

I can get a driver card here for about 250 UKP but then I need a D-A to
read it, and write custom code to make it behave like a joystick. All a
pain in the seat - and as always, I'm in a real hurry !!

Heh. The problem is not getting them, but that I've got them!

I'm working on a cockpit previously used to develop stuff for the
Eurofighter Typhoon and it's LVDT equipped.

yup - the 2001 is the new version of the 101.

don't forget - if you get them from the US they come in 110V!!!!!!
i have the diagram to convert the 101 to 220, very simple.

and i think Jay was refering to the amps not the LVDTs?

LVDT's are gonna be a little out of the budget for this job I think. I
need to graft some pots into this beast if I can.  As always, there's not
a lot of room in there, and precious little movement either.

One day - I'll get an _easy_ sim to do !

Right you need the LVDT amps to drive them and get an analog signal  
you can use.  Either the one Ido or David recommended will work.

If you pick LVDT amp with a 0 to 5 v output just feed it to a phidget 
8/8/8 analog input and you are good to go!
