Thinking about it, didn't the Yoke in the Concord have a little side stick on it or something? Just a little 6" stick that juts out from the Yoke body on the right? I see Austin has included the Concord in X-Plane now. Must try it sometime. One thing you may be able to clear up, because I've been told this but don't know how much credence to apply to it, that the Concord actually flew by shifting fuel (weight) from forward to rear, and right wing to left wing? Any truth to that? Theory being that it flew so fast ailerons were ineffective (or prone to being blown to bits) so when you turn the Yoke left, pumps transfer fuel from the right wing to the left wing. Sounds bizaar, but possible? I think that would take far too long. However... "the centre of gravity (CoG) on Concorde it critical to it being able to maintain supersonic speeds and also fly successfully at low speeds. The centre of lift of the aircraft, when flying at Mach2, can move by some 6 feet. On a traditional subsonic aircraft the control surfaces (or entire tailplane) would be moved to trim the aircraft correctly, but on Concorde this would be unacceptable due to the drag it would cause and also leave very little movement left to control the aircraft. The way the change in the centre of lift from the wings is trimmed out on Concorde is to compensate by moving the weight distribution, or CoG, by pumping fuel from the forward trim tanks to the rear trim tanks and vice versa. The trim tanks make up around 33 tons of fuel that can be moved around the aircraft. (the main tanks hold 95 tons). Before take off and during the acceleration through Mach1 to an eventual Mach 2, fuel is pumped out of the forward trim tanks to the rear trim tanks and the collector tanks in the wings. Around 20 tons of fuel is moved in the process and results in a rearward shift of the CoG by 6ft (2 meters.) At the end of the Cruise during the deceleration fuel is pumped forward to the wing transfer and even the forward trim tanks is necessary thus moving the CofG forward again as the centre of lift moves reward. Once on the ground it is standard practice to then pump more fule into the forward trim tanks to correctly balance the aircraft, so it can be unloaded without any stability problems and the chance of it becoming a "tailsitter" The Movement of fuel also provides additional benefits at lower speeds: By making the aircraft rearward heavy during take off and landing, this causes the elevons control surfaces to move downwards to counteract this weight and in so doing so increases the camber of the wing generating more lift at slower speeds. Another feature is the ability to move fuel across the aircraft between tanks 1 and 4. This allows the aircraft roll trim to be set without having slightly different deflection on the elevons, which again adds drag and reduces performance. The full transfers on Concorde are carried out by the flight engineer from his fuel control panel. On Concorde this is one of the most important and time consuming jobs for the engineer. The panel allows the engineer to set up the transfers to be carried out automatically and stop when the relevant quantities of fuel have been moved to the correct tanks." -- Roy Coates. Well Mr. Coates, I certainly found your Co"G" spot! (sorry) That was a wonderful breif on the workings of that bird. Thank you. You should post that to Wikki. I guess what I heard was right (although lacking the detail) Concorde was an incredible machine no doubt. I was also told it had 6 computers, could fly on two, but if two went down it would just find the closest place to land in it's limited list of available airports. I don't think the Pilots really had a lot of control over this aircraft. If there were no computers for example, you are dead. It wont fly that way except tumbling straight down. Basically an upper atmosphere missile with wings. The prep time to get this thing in the air is reported to be huge. I have seen pictures looking forward to the cabin. The station on the right is the fuel transfer module??? Looks like the bloody Space Shuttle! Maybe more room in the Space Shuttle. I'll have to try it now. Got my interest piqued. Paris to NY. For those of you who aren't aware, the KC-135R holds a variety of time-to-climb records for a couple of weight classes, all viewable here: http://records.fai.org/general_aviation/aircraft.asp?id=965 Just for an example, for the 45,000-60,000kg weight class (~100k-132k lbs), the record to 15,000m (just shy of 50,000 feet) is just 8 minutes, 15 seconds - an AVERAGE of just under 6000fpm! That's completely retarded fast, if you hadn't noticed.... Anywho, yesterday I was supposed to have a sim along with another new copilot and an instructor. Due to a scheduling mixup our instructor couldn't make it... So there I sit with this other young Lt. Neither of us is qualified to operate the sim, but the maintenance guy there basically shrugged his shoulders and said as long as we left the motion off and didn't do anything crazy, she was all ours! >:D Imagine two young copilots getting tossed the keys to a multi-million dollar high-fidelity sim and being told "have at it!" :) Fun times, I tell ya. Anyway, for the first 1 1/2 hours or so we kept things pretty vanilla, just practicing our approach and landing work, a few VFR patterns, etc. But then we decided to have some fun before we hopped out. So we put it on the runway ready for takeoff, and dropped it down to a 20,000lb fuel load - for reference, our max fuel load is 200,000, and we are supposed to plan to LAND with 20-25k. Min fuel is 14k, emergency is 10. Then we did a static, takeoff-rated thrust (full throttle, essentially) 30-flap takeoff..... I damn near wet myself. That jet got off the ground so fast it made my head spin. I totally forgot to call for the gear because I was just in awe of what was happening - and we STILL climbed out at almost 30 degrees nose high, never hitting much more than .4 AOA (with 1.0 being a full stall, .6 being our standard approach AOA). I never even thought to look at my VSI, I was too busy saying "Holy !@#$" over and over again in my head. It was a religious experience, let me tell you.... So then we had to do it again, naturally! :) Still just as jaw-dropping the second time. I'm gonna have to do it again someday, with a video camera in tow... I'd love to actually record the numbers of just exactly what happened. Back at Altus they had a recording setup that would take all the data plus video from several different angles. Unfortunately I don't think they have that setup here... Good times, good times. :) Brian From raysot at comcast.net Thu Jul 2 22:51:55 2009 From: raysot at comcast.net (Ray Sotkiewicz) Date: Thu, 02 Jul 2009 22:51:55 -0700 Subject: [simpits-tech] So THAT'S how they set those records.... I suspect he blamed the community for that and any troubles since. Had he made a smaller commitment in hardware, I think things would have come out much differently. Had he spent the time to do the research, it would have become quite apparent that what the "community" says it will do and what it actually *does* tend to be two different things when money is involved. :) Another good rule to follow is "cash in advance". ;) What kills me is the fact that the BI hardware is so damn *good*. The only true competition he had commercially was EPIC and that's still a fantastic platform. There's some work being done with the PHCC hardware line to bring it closer to something a non-hardcore geek can handle, which will be good for all of us. The good thing about BI going away is the surge in uptake of the PHCC hardware (http://phcc.varxec.net/wiki/Main_Page for those that aren't familiar with it) within the F-16 cockpit building community over at viperpits.org. Those guys have made huge strides in using the stuff that Manuel Bessler has created. The only down side is that there are not (yet) pre-assembled boards available. I'm sure it won't be long though. Even as kits, they're easy to solder up and have no surface mount parts. I've built some of the hardware, but I haven't had a chance to do more than smoke test it after assembly. I'm seriously considering tearing out all the BI hardware support from my CIM application and replacing it with support for the PHCC serial protocol and possibly adding EPIC support. Mike Powell's new book has been sent off to the publisher and he's got a ton of electronic projects that I could support as well. He's designed a cheap digital to synchro converter that I've been lusting after from the moment he posted pictures of it. :) That project is the only way the ADI & HSI in my F-15 will ever operate. g. -- Proud owner of F-15C 80-0007 http://www.f15sim.com - The only one of its kind. My understanding of what an LVDT is was faulty. There seem to be a new breed of DC LVDT's but my understanding of the typical setup is that you feed an AC signal into coil A, and then read that signal back from coil B. The magnet which forms the moving part of the device causes a phase-shift between input and output - it is this that gives you your position, normally presented as a voltage thanks to the clever black boxes you normally hang these things on. Anyone know anything about the uber-sweet new hall-effect devices that can be used as a straight swap for pots? Hmm... toys.... -- Roy Coates. Dept of Engineering. Liverpool University. My (faulty) understand was that they were a form of load cell. Google rapped my knuckles about that. :) > Anyone know anything about the uber-sweet new hall-effect devices that can > be used as a straight swap for pots? > They're not that new. Hall effect based replacements for pots have been around quite a while. In Mike Powell's new book, he's got a project that uses a device called "A1301 hall sensor". It's a three wire part, very similar in size to a 2N2222 transistor. He uses it as a 0..5V voltage divider. When he first posted info about it, I bought 5 of them from DigiKey and they were less than a buck each. If you head over to his site (http://www.mikesflightdeck.com/) and scroll down a bit (or search for "A1301" you can see how he's using it. If you scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the "previous rants" link you will find a little more info on it under "Position Sensors Chapter Revisions" about the middle of the page. As far as I can tell, you can use these devices as a direct replacement for a 5v based voltage dividing pot. I know that there has been a lot of success in replacing the jitter-prone pots in the Cougar stick with a couple of hall effect devices. I think there is someone selling a refit kit for something like $60, but this was some time ago. g. -- Proud owner of F-15C 80-0007 http://www.f15sim.com - The only one of its kind. All I can say is HOT DAMN! :) This is one sweet stick... Much more than I'd hoped for. My wife is even excited about it - mainly because of the fact that A) There are far fewer cords than my old setup and B) since it's USB and hot-pluggable, the cords disappear as soon as I put the stick away. :) Anyway, well worth the money, IMHO... As long as it lasts. I think, though, based on my previous Saitek experience, it will. Message-ID: A friend of mine has recently gotten a 747-300 flight deck for use as a simulator cockpit. Take a peek at this picture: http://www.geneb.org/patio_jet.jpg The mystery involves the big "T" shaped patch that's on the side of the cockpit. The same patch is on the other side. According to the documentation he has, the aircraft has never been involved in an incident that would require this kind of reinforcement patch. Cathay Pacific won't release the maintenance records to him. I'm wondering if this is the result of some kind of Airworthyness Directive. I need a GPS that is software driven to convince X-plane that the aircraft is not over my house . I have one on order but Seattle Avionics claims it runs on an NMEA 0183 interface anyone heard of a plug-in to adapt to that interface in X-plane ? The company is www.seattleavionics.com their base product makes X-planes moving map look like it's from the Neanthrathals ! While I acknowledge it not a rotary swage, it was also not $50 per swage that the local cable monger wanted. Tomorrow I will get the proper drill to finish the holes for the MS21260 cable ends. Only a person like Gene could afford to have a pair hanging around his man land only to be used one or two times of the F15. So I visited Harbor Freight, and found a pair of 18 inch bolt cutters for under $20usd. Then off to the water jet boys to make some new jaws, for around $20usd Tomorrow I will pick up the end mill to cut the die pattern, around $10usd While I acknowledge the jaws are not made from tool steel, I am sure I can get the 10 or 12 crimps I need! Here is a link showing the conversion. http://www.737flightsim.com/cut/cut.html David www.737FlightSim.com _______________________________________________ Simpits-tech mailing list Simpits-tech at simpits.org http://www.simpits.org/mailman/listinfo/simpits-tech To unsubscribe, please see the instructions at the bottom of the above page.
