Someone mentioned something that worked really well, but was on the pricey side - could whoever it was fill me in on the details? Secondly, I was wondering if anyone here had played around with making a lightweight mirror out of mylar before. I was poking around for some info yesterday and I found a pretty neat system for pulling all of the corners tight, seeming to me to make a pretty distortion-free reflection. Just wondering if anyone here had played with it before. And finally, I was wondering if anyone had any good info on the ratio of projector distance vs. image size. I'd imagine it probably varies somewhat with projector model, but a good ballpark figure would be nice. On the pricey side look at diffusion glass for rear projection this is what the pros use. You can make your own if you are willing. Various sizes are available from most glass manufactures, they are typically quite heavy as well as expensive. To make our own use a sheet of plate glass and create a diffuse surface to project your image upon. Your diffuse surface may be created using a 6X6 piece of glass and brake fluid. Apply the brake fluid on the surface of the plate glass and using your 6X6 glass tool move the glass in a circular motion moving the brake fluid as needed until the entire surface of your diffuse glass appears uniformly opaque. Question #2 I have not tried any of the methods for stretching mylar at this time, some look pretty good. I worry about my ability to do it right the first time. Just so as you know I think it is worthy of a try sometime in the future. Question #3 The light projected is reduced according to what is referred to as the Chi square law. The light is reduced according to the square of the distance. Imagine if you will that the projected image at 2 foot is a 2 foot by 2 foot square at 1700 lumins. At 8 feet the image projected is a square 8 foot by 8 foot the lumins would by reduced by the square of the distance in this care 8 square is 64 square feet the total lumins at any point equals 1/64th of the total lumins. Hope this helps. It works though I dont think its quite as strong as a real shaker. I think a second stick mounted on the right pedal will give it plenty of force. If you have your feet on the pedals there is no question when the shaker is engaged and I love it. Nice one Justin! I've powered up the shakers on the J41 and they are seriously powerful. I clamped them to my workbench and they made the bench "dance" :-) Can't wait to get 'em working in the sim now! Roy. -- Roy Coates. Dept of Engineering. Liverpool University. There is a math formula that determines this, for example The focus of a image is based upon the lens diameter times the f ration. Hope this helps. This does not give you the image size at a given distance however for projection. I would have to do some further research to determine the image size and focus at a given distance. Sounds interesting. But on the third question, I wasn't really going for the amount of lumens, but the actual size of the projected image - i.e. a projector 6' away will make an image roughly 2'x3' in size, etc (just using random numbers for that example - no idea what it would actually be). Message-ID: Hello everyone, It's time for me to stop lurking and start working on my own cockpit. Since I cannot decide between building a Cessna 172 or a Barron 58 cockpit for my own use and training, I have decided I will build both. The Cessna will be my first effort since it is the simpler of the two and probably has a higher probability of success and completion. To keep construction and complexity down, I have decided to drive my gauges with an LCD behind the panel. While looking at www.baron58.com, I noticed that he used gauge fronts from Simkits to add a bit more realism to his cockpit. I have not been able to get an answer back from Simkits if they will sell me the gauge rings and lens. Does anyone else know of any source for gauge rings and lens? I would like to try fitting a rotary encoder behind the gauges that need adjustment knobs, so depth does matter since the LCD will be behind the panel. On another note, I will be using Amtel AVR microcontrollers to drive my avionics stack and the GPS/weather radar. Has anyone else done this? I would be very interested in your experiences. I should be buying my first AVR controller board and accessories from Futurlec this payday (http://www.futurlec.com/ATMEGA_Controller.shtml). Lots of ports and lots of program space to play with. The AVR appear to much more cost effective than PICs for this kind of work. -Freeman From bjones at pipecomp.com.au Thu Jan 31 17:00:44 2008 From: bjones at pipecomp.com.au (Ben Jones) Date: Fri, 1 Feb 2008 10:00:44 +0900 Subject: [simpits-tech] Aircraft Marshalling References: <00f801c8640a$75c16bc0$3d00a8c0@bjblackbox> Message-ID: <003801c8646d$dfff9120$0b00000a@BenLaptop> Thats great congrats, you will never forget a first solo !
