David,
sorry for the hang up, my cell died. 
What I was going to say is the ship one DC-8 had
speedbrakes but they had no effect and were deleted.
spoilers were used for a while but were found to be
the cause of some accidents. Their airborne use is now
banned.  The solution became the use of in flight
inboard thrust reverse combined and good flight
planning. DC-8s use inflight thrust reverse to this day.
