	If you unlinked the pot and are using some other sort of position sensor, 
why can't you just leave the gear ratio nice and low so you get plenty of 
precision? You could move the motor by the standard method through the servo 
plug, or just replace the pot with some sort of variable resistance circuit 
controlled by the computer.
