Whether or not we intend it, I think every one of us acquires stacks of
stuff which will only ever prove a nuisance to those who have to sort
our effects. <br>
<br>
In 2003, both my parents in law and my father all died, and left
overwhelmingly large clearing up problems behind. My father had been a
book collector, so the local branch library suddenly gained a couple of
thousand extra volumes, but there were still all the other things you'd
normally find. <br>
<br>
My father in law was a collector of just about everything else, and we
cleared over 10 cu yds out of the garage so that we could begin on the
house. (Thanks for providing the translation: I was nearly 30 when we
went metric in the 1970s, so I think in both systems, sometimes
randomly. It confuses my grandson, I'm afraid!) <br>
<br>
When you are faced with something like that -- and the realisation that
you will be discarding stuff that had meaning to you at one time --
summer can be a far more attractive alternative. I try never to beat
myself up for putting off tomorrow. Someone said that procrastination
can be a very useful way of coping with life until you can find a
better alternative. Some people just find a better alternative quicker
than others do. My wife wasn't really able to bring herself to doing
much with her parents' place until early this year, though her own
health issues didn't help either.<br>

It sounds as though your sisters are pretty organised people, but I'm
glad they are giving you some time to be quiet, particularly with
Christmas on the way. You'll have lots of memories and have been living
in the midst of them I gather; and you would need to take stock in a
different way from them. I used to work with a girl who is only the age
of my elder son, but had a very strong "big sister" attitude. Sometimes
I'd have to tell her, "You are such a fussbudget: stand back and let me
work at my own pace and in my own way!" But there were also many times
when I valued her ability to structure a problem and find a solution
while I was still thinking about it. <br>

Well, we went late-night shopping tonight and discovered that hardly
anyone seemed to realise that the stores we went to were going to be
open tonight. Usually the pre-Christmas extended hours begin next week.
So we had the most relaxed pre-Christmas shop in years, but we had
dinner after getting back and I fell asleep in the lounge chair with my
laptop warming my knees, so it's nearly 1 am and I should go to bed. My
wife is in charge of emergency relief with a local welfare agency, and
they are working tomorrow giving hampers to disadvantaged clients, so
there will be an early start around our way... <br>

going through things here. The weather and outside world were just SO

guess my sisters had plans to move things around in the house during

shredder!) There IS a LOT (volume) of software and books still to go
thru. Still have the DR: DOS, GEM; Qd: QEMM and DesqView; and
associated books Sw. Plus The OS/2-OS/3 Sw and books, and, oh, Netware
that I still have trouble believing I got hold of and NEVER ran! (Some
of that REQUIRES the Y2K (3.x-->3.2 and 4.x-->4.2) updates (which I've
never seen) to be useful NOW.
Things have gotten kinda quiet here this last week - which is VERY good
- since Christmas is near and I'd LIKE to get in the mood BEFORE it
arrives! (The week before one of my sisters hired a house inspector and
he had a look and gave us a written report. My other sister used her
special vacuum to TRY and clean some of Mom's old stains up - partial
success.)

I was thinking... how far back does the GEM group go? I think I've
beeninvolved since 1998 or 1999, but could be wrong. It's been a
while...
