Does anyone remember how to change backgrounds on the desktop? -------- Original Message -------- Subject: How can be updated the OpenGEM background Desktop with an image? Date: Thu, 20 Sep 2007 21:14:52 +0200 (CEST) From: To: Hello, I have been looking on Internet how to setup the OpenGEM desktop to insert a background image. In some webs I found that FreeGEM support background images but in none explain how can be the background image permanently inserted without using the ViewMAX/3 Desktop. The only thing that I have found is this screenshot that verifies it is possible: http://www.owenrudge.net/GEM/dispss?image=images/fgbmp.gif&text=fgbmp A lot of thanks. To the best of my recollection, there's no support for it in my Desktop. The screenshot on Owen's site looks like Ben's desktop, so perhaps that can do it. I never added background support to my Desktop because it would only have worked in the Desktop, not in other apps - not a problem in a ViewMAXy file manager, but not very good in a full desktop application. I was hoping to do something better with the larger available memory space in EMMA. -- John Elliott From owen at owenrudge.net Mon Sep 24 11:16:10 2007 From: owen at owenrudge.net (Owen Rudge) Date: Mon, 24 Sep 2007 19:16:10 +0100 Subject: [GEM Development] [Fwd: How can be updated the OpenGEM background In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <46F7FEEA.8000200@owenrudge.net> > To the best of my recollection, there's no support for it in my Desktop. > The screenshot on Owen's site looks like Ben's desktop, so perhaps that can > do it. If I recall correctly, it was the "UITEST.APP" program at this page that let me set the background image: http://www.seasip.info/Gem/gengem.html It would persist through to other applications, I think. It would be reset upon startup, of course. Nope, I didn't include for much the same reasons -- plus space constraints in the original Desktop. The only way I can think of to load a background bitmap is your UITEST.APP, but I didn't think it would persist across app changes or I'd have tried to hack something up! -- Regards, Ben A L Jemmett. http://flatpack.microwavepizza.co.uk/ ---------------------------------------------- This mail sent through http://www.ukonline.net From Olivier.Landemarre at utbm.fr Mon Sep 24 13:13:36 2007 From: Olivier.Landemarre at utbm.fr (Olivier.Landemarre at utbm.fr) Date: Mon, 24 Sep 2007 22:13:36 +0200 Subject: [GEM Development] [Fwd: How can be updated the OpenGEM background In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <1190664816.46f81a7012649@webmail.utbm.fr> Selon John Elliott : > > > > Guys, I got the following email. > > > > Does anyone remember how to change backgrounds on the desktop? > > To the best of my recollection, there's no support for it in my Desktop. > The screenshot on Owen's site looks like Ben's desktop, so perhaps that can > do it. > I never added background support to my Desktop because it would only have > worked in the Desktop, not in other apps - not a problem in a ViewMAXy file > manager, but not very good in a full desktop application. Hello all This not exactly the question, but I think a good idea for futur developpments: Modify objc_draw function like this: If tree = current desktop tree and obj = 0, and ob_type not an userdef or a very specific type, then not draw this object classically but put the desktop picture, like this all applications with a desktop, will share same desktop picture this is visually funny, less getting tired for eyes and work very well. I have implement it in MyAES: http://myaes.lutece.net/ There is no good picture example of this in the web site unfortunatly. Just an idea! Robert Avis was my first point of contact with GEM development. I had been given a 386 box -- full tower, space for about 6 drives -- and had it running quite happily with DOS, but wanted a decent GUI for it. Someone else gave me a set of GEM disks from an Amstrad, and I found Robert while searching for more information on what GEM was about. I have a sense that he lived somewhere near Tunbridge, and I sent him the sets of files from the GEM disks, which he posted on his site. From there, he put me in touch with Ben and John and GEM development. I'd used ViewMAX earlier as a file manager in DOS 5 and in OS/2 Warp, but was vague about how GEM and ViewMAX were related. That's about it.
