Hm, blank ASSIGN.SYS and incorrect video driver.  Now fixed.

On starting the system tries to read drive E: (CD) and reports that it
is not ready if there is no disk inserted.  I have to click CANCEL to
continue.

The next problem is that the desktop does not start.  A message appears
saying that the application cannot open the file or folder that I have
specified.

I'm using your FreeGEM Desktop 3.2.4 (small model).  The DESKTOP.INI
file has the following content:
