You know that Ubuntu is a branch of Debian and is synched with Debian
unstable every 6 months? Same config files in the same places and so on,
just different repositories with a lot more up-to-date packages in them.
It's also exhaustively tested /on top of/ the testing that Debian gets,
plus it has a large and active and helpful support community of its own,
with, in my experience, nowhere near as much Attitude as Debian users have.
Personally, I use it almost exclusively now.
As for command prompts - I've recently tried to install both FreeDOS and
GNU/DOS under the free edition of VMware Server and VirtualPC on my Mac
G3. Both are a bit of shambles, I thought. I know DOS inside out, both
MS-DOS and DR-DOS (and indeed PC DOS), and FreeDOS seems to have a lot
of little differences. Its startup sequence is a mess, with spelling
errors, error messages, stuff that's unsupported - e.g. the FreeDOS boot
CD doesn't support CD-ROMs, which is frankly /incredible!/
Not impressed at /all./ I'd go with DR-DOS like a shot myself. Also
open, also GPL, current and supported and being actively developed.
The DOS shell is more familiar if you come from a PC-ish background,
certainly, but the Linux shell is so much more powerful that frankly
there is just no comparison. It takes some learning - I only know 10% of
the functionality, if that, compared with maybe 90% of DOS, but still, I
can do more in Linux than I can in DOS. It's worth learning.
