Blair sent me some more information about UPXing in reply to a
question of mine:

"It is significant enough to do it.  The *.app files for GEM WILL UPX,
but will not run properly, unfortunately."

Whoops!  So it looks like UPX does not work with our appfiles, and
therefore is not really a direction that can help with much inside the
GEM package in a standard distro.  Blair wants to UPX as much as
possible to reduce the size of his ISOs.
