Cockpit-Fest opens simulated flight to all * By Fred Mann * The Wichita Eagle
Gabe Messenger appeared to be in total control of his airplane right up to the moment he crashed trying to land on an aircraft carrier in the middle of the ocean .
But the 12-year-old from Arkansas climbed out of the flight simulator Saturday morning feeling pretty good about it.
“I meant to do it. It’s just fun to sometimes crash,” he said.
The King Air simulator he flew was built by Matt Bailey, of Moore, Okla. It was among the simulators and cockpits on display during the second annual Cockpit-Fest USA underway this weekend at the Kansas Aviation Museum, 3350 S. George Washington Blvd.
The event includes the debut of a President Kennedy Air Force One replica cockpit and stateroom, and simulators of a 1967 Link-4J Phantom II, a plane flown by the Blue Angels in the 1960s, as well as a B-52 Stratofortress, DC-9, A-7 Corsair, F-84F Thunderstreak and F-15A Eagle.
About 80 exhibitors of simulator hardware and software from around the U.S. and the world, some from as far away as Poland and South Africa, are attending the event. It is being held in association with the Newark Air Museum, UK.
Cockpit-Fest USA continues today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. At 1 p.m., it will feature a fly-by of three historic Stearman biplanes.
Bailey, who is attending with his wife, Ruth, and three-month-old son, Jonathan, keeps his simulator in his garage. It took a year for him to build the hardware and 21/2 to write the software. And he’s still working on it, he said. It uses three computers and has radios from real airplanes.
Bailey said he loves to fly and has been flying since he can remember because his dad is a pilot.
Justin Messenger, Gabe’s uncle and co-founder of the event who works for Nu-Tek Simulations, based in Augusta, said Cockpit-Fest USA appeals to fans of general aviation and computer technology, giving them a chance to combine two hobbies at once.
“Some people spend more time developing software and hardware for flight simulators than they actually do flying them,” he said. “I’m one of them.”
Three exhibitors from Poland staffed a booth at the event. Wojciech Krzywda, head of VFRPoland, which offers photographic scenery of Poland for flight simulators, said he learned about Wichita’s aviation history before coming.
“Looking at the map of Wichita and seeing 11 airfields around the city .. wow. It’s amazing, it’s just amazing,” he said.

btw I did find a usb -> 429 thing but didn't bookmark it..
Now upwards.. on to my favorite subjects 'what you wanted to know but where
afraid to ask' LOL I did a college paper on the math to drive a synchro the
easy way.. piece of cake..
1. synchro review (quick I promise) as you know you put 400hz on the cotrol
windings of a Tx and a Rx synchro's and then you attach a - a, b - b, and
c - c right? so if you move the Tx the Rx will follow... all good so far?
2. question. if you put 400hz(ref) on a, and then 400hz(+120d) on b, and
then 400hz(+240d) on c what would you need to move the pointer to 120d or
240d on the control windings..
If you can give me the right answer on Saturday afternoon (as I have a day
off today) and no guessing..
I will tell you why and how it works I might even right about it on
my element14 blog LOL

My summer sim project will be synchros....I *think* I have a pretty good idea on how to read as well as drive most synchros, which will open up a lot of possibilities for older hardware.

allow me to use newer hardware without even opening up the equipment.

I had a gander at flighthelmet.com and found a SRU-21/P Nomex Survival Vest ( brand new non issued) perfect for what I need !.
Fired off a email to them, got a reply from the sales dept, product is all good for export to Oz as clothing.
Warmed the credit card up.
Now to wait for the 10 days till it arrives …….

travel as I am retired AF Crew Chief (Lead Sled), it was a shame to see
them all retired. I had the privilege of back seating twice... It was the
best ride in the dam park. . . I get to Dallas quite a bit though..

You could do as Chris Woodul does, He sits in the F-111 and makes the masses look over the edge, wishing they could sit inside too. Only VIPs get invitations to enter.
On a side note, one of the judges for the simulator category is flying here from the Seattle area (again). He's a Viperpits member. The Viperpit gang are putting together a slick F-16 exhibit. Saturday at noon the former McConnell ANG F-16 wing commander is going to have an autograph session with them and then show off his videos of 9g training in a Gsimulator. http://www.simadventure.com/

It takes some serious logistical support to have an event like this. The KAM museum director is actively supporting this event and is on the Cockpit-Fest comittee. At the moment CF nearly a 2nd job for me.
The former Curator of the Frontiers of Flight musuem couldn't pull togther a Cockpit-Fest Dallas due to the lack of support in the museum. So he now hauls his cockpit up here from Ft. Worth to join us.
On another note, today Pilot Edge became a CF sponsor by donating a PE membership as a simulator award. Keith also plans to attend in person.

CF2012 was really a blast.....I am still amazed that I actually have the opportunity to participate in something like this, or even that such an event exists. CF2013 will be even better.......we're gonna have more sims, and there is some cool gadgetry sitting on my workbench as we speak. :)
