I have to agree about the whine, I shut the 400hz off as much as possible when working on sims. It makes my ears hurt to have it on all day.

Cockpit-Fest opens simulated flight to all * By Fred Mann * The Wichita Eagle
Gabe Messenger appeared to be in total control of his airplane right up to the moment he crashed trying to land on an aircraft carrier in the middle of the ocean .
But the 12-year-old from Arkansas climbed out of the flight simulator Saturday morning feeling pretty good about it.
“I meant to do it. It’s just fun to sometimes crash,” he said.
The King Air simulator he flew was built by Matt Bailey, of Moore, Okla. It was among the simulators and cockpits on display during the second annual Cockpit-Fest USA underway this weekend at the Kansas Aviation Museum, 3350 S. George Washington Blvd.
The event includes the debut of a President Kennedy Air Force One replica cockpit and stateroom, and simulators of a 1967 Link-4J Phantom II, a plane flown by the Blue Angels in the 1960s, as well as a B-52 Stratofortress, DC-9, A-7 Corsair, F-84F Thunderstreak and F-15A Eagle.
About 80 exhibitors of simulator hardware and software from around the U.S. and the world, some from as far away as Poland and South Africa, are attending the event. It is being held in association with the Newark Air Museum, UK.
Cockpit-Fest USA continues today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. At 1 p.m., it will feature a fly-by of three historic Stearman biplanes.
Bailey, who is attending with his wife, Ruth, and three-month-old son, Jonathan, keeps his simulator in his garage. It took a year for him to build the hardware and 21/2 to write the software. And he’s still working on it, he said. It uses three computers and has radios from real airplanes.
Bailey said he loves to fly and has been flying since he can remember because his dad is a pilot.
Justin Messenger, Gabe’s uncle and co-founder of the event who works for Nu-Tek Simulations, based in Augusta, said Cockpit-Fest USA appeals to fans of general aviation and computer technology, giving them a chance to combine two hobbies at once.
“Some people spend more time developing software and hardware for flight simulators than they actually do flying them,” he said. “I’m one of them.”
Three exhibitors from Poland staffed a booth at the event. Wojciech Krzywda, head of VFRPoland, which offers photographic scenery of Poland for flight simulators, said he learned about Wichita’s aviation history before coming.
“Looking at the map of Wichita and seeing 11 airfields around the city .. wow. It’s amazing, it’s just amazing,” he said.

You could do as Chris Woodul does, He sits in the F-111 and makes the masses look over the edge, wishing they could sit inside too. Only VIPs get invitations to enter.
On a side note, one of the judges for the simulator category is flying here from the Seattle area (again). He's a Viperpits member. The Viperpit gang are putting together a slick F-16 exhibit. Saturday at noon the former McConnell ANG F-16 wing commander is going to have an autograph session with them and then show off his videos of 9g training in a Gsimulator.

I now refuse to use anything but the Hagstrom KEAD6. They are rock solid, have neat programing features, and Hagstrom support/warranty is the best. The KEAD6 seem to be happy with any pots Ive tried from 10 to 100k.

Interesting..... I'll have to do some digging, all the TA-4 canopies I've seen have the center bar.
The profile at the front matches the TA as well as the A-4M which used the same type of front windscreen.

Here is an updated video about the Air Force One replica that we put together in in 2008. We got a call and had had 6 weeks to find a fuslage, have it cut, then convert it. The plane was previously the Kerry/Edwards Presidential campain jet. Just before retirement the plane carried the Lakers team for a championship game. We found notes about the game written by team members as well as other NBA items.
The actual conversion was finished in 4 weeks. The last four years it has been on tour around the USA and has been visited by thousands.

Hi gang..
I have been involved with flight simulators since i worked a Interdata back
in the mid and late 70s. Commercial / Military FS are in real time. The b52
sim @ Singer Link (Interdata 8/32) had a map / model on the wall with a
flying camera. It used our own in-house real-time OS. While at Grumman, I
worked on the X-29 sim (fixed base cockpit) It used Interdata then renamed
Perkin Elmer and a newer version of the 8/32 and again their real-time OS.
My partner Paul has also worked in FS & OSs since the 80's. Never have any
of our discussions, ever came across MS anything including windows, except
as workstations for the programmers. UNIX/Linux and
or embedded variants, has a long history in FS and real-time work. The OS
has not really changed much since System V came out in the mid 80's. yes
there have be improvements, filesystems, etc. but you know an ls is still
ls and ps is still ps. The user environment has not changed at all sh,
bash, ksh, ftp, grep, vi, ect.
Now ask youself how many times did the user environment change? lets see
CP/M, DOS, (cant remember the name but it got sued by apple for icon
infringement)Windows 1 - 3 et al., Windows for Workgroups, Windows NT,
Windows 95, Windows Me (remember that POS), Vista, Windows XP (and count
the variants), Windows 7, and now Windows 8. That is a moving target, and
you have to support a Sim for maybe 10 years or more. And you also have to
remember that Networking (Internet) was never built in to the OS untill
very recent. I dont think they could spell Ethernet.
I first Ethernet system that I ever put in was at Epitax in the mid 80's
when I was at college. It was Ethernet on Thick Coax with transceivers with
vampire taps.

At Cockpit-Fest USA over half of the cockpits and even some of the museum aircraft had vinal decals custom cut by Randy Hughs at Great Signs America.
Randy's business is in the same location as the avionics shop that I work at and he loves making decals for cockpits. Please feel free to contact him for your projects.

The event went well and plans are under way for another one in the spring. The museum director was both surprised and inspired by the enthusiasm of the exhibitors and he hopes the event will contiue to grow.
The awards went to;
Steve Blevins F-4 Phantom - Stearman Award for Best Aircraft Cockpit.
Steve Cannaby B-52 Stratofortress - Flight Safety Award for Best Simulator Cockpit.
Steve Cannaby B-52 Stratofortress - Most dramatic restoration award.
Dewey Larson A-7 Corsair - People's Choice outdoor exhibit.
Matt Bailey home built simulator - People's Choice indoor exhibit.
Chris Woodul - Spirit of Cockpit-Fest Award.
Steve Blevins had a fantastic Stearman sunset flight Saturday evening for his award.
Matt Baily it was a blast meeting you and to fly your sim. I love your python skills!! :) I look forward to many more conversations with you.
I am worn out from serious lack of sleep but it was well worth it. I was surprised so many Viperpit members flew in from out of State and it was hard to stop visiting and to go to bed.
Several of us are getting together again at Babes Chicken for dinner this Saturday evening after the Ft. Worth/Alliance airshow.

Viewdonic PJD5351 or PJD5352 are good cheap short throw projectors. I use one in my sim and we've used heaps at work.

So, any suggestions? Alternatively, if there is some way to use extra lenses to enlarge a "normal" projector's image, I could pick up more of these cheap projectors and just enlarge their images. I have a little bit of optics right now which I'm going to experiment with and see what I can get.

It looks like we will need to place your sim indoors with the indoor exhibits. Im glad you are bringing a GA project, so far the rest are military.
My means invite the guy to cockpit-fest. Id be interested to hear about his project. I found Stewart because they specialize in DC-8 and other old jet parts. I got lucky they had the radome. The funny thing is, Ive been within a mile of their location with the B-52 sim and had no idea they were in the area. Been driving within 4 miles of the radome for 10 years. lol.
I think Chris still has three F-111 modules with the main one on display at the Frontiers of Flight Collection. Its not set up as a sim, its in original configuration and much of the gear powering up including the radar scope and the HUD. He is also bringing ejections seats and an F-16 cockpit to cockpit-fest. Im looking onto the possibility of building a pitch only motion base for my F-4. Most of the pitch would be nose up with a very limited nose down motion.
Any thoughts on the best controller option? Factoring in speed, g, and pitch attitude gets a bit complicated. I want a reasonable sensation of accelleration on takeoff, of decelleration, and of course pitch angle.

Yes, you will need to bring a projection screen. You will be in the same room with the 707 cockpit TV set that was used for the ABC TV show Pan Am. We also just confirmed a Blue Angel F-4 Phantom nose section will arrive for outdoor display.

The KansasAviationMuseumin association with the NewarkAirMuseumis hosting the first ever Cockpit-FestUSAthis September 29th/30th in Wichita, Kansas, the Air Capitol of the world.
All private individuals and museums are invited to bring your cockpits and simulators for outdoor display during this 2 day event that coincides with the McConnell AFB air show featuring the USAF Thunderbirds. An indoor exhibit area will also be provided for instrument panel displays. Aircraft simulators will be available to the public for flight.

Matt, we are in Wichita, that should be even closer to you. What type of sim do you have?
The museum Director gave us a go, so cockpitfest USA 2012 is going to happen. (Side note, He is still jazzed about the great turnout for the B-52 50th Anniversary event I had a week ago)
It will be September 29th-30th during the McConnell AFB airshow so we will have the Thunderbirds flying overhead :) There will also be a good public spectator turnout at the museum due to the airshow. We are going to check into a cockpit grand prize winner of 1 hour flight time at Flightsafety Wichita.
