Yeah, JB is pretty cool... makes nice GUI apps, and creates standalone
exe's which is nice. For me it was a no brainer since I knew how to
work in BASIC, then I just had to learn the GUI bits... but it does have
its limitations :)
Now I am going to have to download Vis Studio Express.... which I am
sure will put my sim building on hold for a while... till I either
create something meaningful in vb or get bored with it! <lol>
Speaking of sim building (which I heard a rumour that we do that
here...) I finally, after years of procrastinating, got the 7 segs
installed in my APX-100, and ARC-159 panels for the Skyhawk... Now,
it's taken me 7 years.. (and the guy who built the electronics has moved
on from sim building) so how long do you recon it'll take to get the
encoders wired up now?
Oh, and in other news... I'm getting a nice shiny new desktop CNC
Mill/Engraver to play with at work.... big enough to do all my panels,
but small and cheap enough for work to cough up the money for!

That's kinda neat Sean. I hadn't heard of that before. If you want to
play with something more powerful, you can download the VB.Net version
of
Visual Studio Express for free.

Writing something that works, and does what you want is pretty cool ;-)
I've only dabbled, but when something works well I get a big grin on my
face! :)

I worked with a codie (is that a Kiwi-ism or are software guys known as
codies, softies, cone-heads, the world over?) who used to start hitting
the keyboard and or mouse buttons harder and *harder* and HARDER when
something wasn't working... was really humorous...especially the look I
used to get when I'd make helpful suggestions ;-)

You'll have fun with it. The .Net assemblies take a lot of work out of
things.

The bed is tiny, about 12" x 9" or similar, and I'm not sure about too
much more. It came down to price, work area, price, and software
compatibility, oh and price :)
I hope to have it here for a demo next week, then assuming it does what
I want (I mean.. what the company wants it to do... obviously <rolls
eyes>) then we'll buy it.
On paper the specs are good enough, we plan on doing mostly plastics
with it, and the accuracy and repeatability are good. It is designed
for doing fine engraving, but with some hardware and software upgrades
it can do 3 axis milling. And did I mention that it was cheap? :)

Make sure you can consistantly control the cutter speed - you have to be
really careful with plastics or it will gum up and snap the bit.

Yup. Feed and spindle speeds.. and using the right cutter <hmm... that
rings a bell>
I've been using a bigger CNC Mill owned by a friend of mine (who is
building an ATR72 in his garage...
http://kickthetyresandlightthefires.blogspot.com/ ) and have done my
learning on his ;-)

Just "Coders" over here. But given that NZ spawned the BOFH, codie works
for me :)

We had a pretty tightly wound postgrad working here. When he went to
answer the call of nature, we hit Shift-Printscreen, then minimised all
his open windows and set his desktop image to be the screen capture we
just took.
When he came back, no amount of clicking would do anything - obviously!
He completely flipped out and trashed his keyboard and monitor. Our
rolling around laughing probably didn't help :-)

I'm surprised you've never heard the term. A Dinosaur Cage is what you
call the room where mini and mainframe computers live. They have raised
floors that have nice, cool places to store beer, food and the bodies of
users that become too annoying to be allowed to continue processing
valueable oxygen. :D

Actually, no. I'm going to use a thing called "tube sand". It's
literally a 30" long tube of sand about 7" in diameter and they weigh
60lbs each. They're double-bagged so you don't get sand everywhere.
