Well folks, it IS possible for a few geeks in a garage to build a fully
collimated cross-cockpit display system.

Here's video and some pics:

You started to mention somthing about distortion at the end of the first video
but it was cut off.  What were you saying?  You can see the image distorted at
the bottom.

So explain where the projector is?  Is it behind you shooting through that
louvered box?  It looks like there is just white cloth over that box.

The battery in the video camera died right then. :)

The image distortion is actually expected and is acceptable. With cockpit
structure in place, it would mask that distortion band along the bottom.

The screen is actually covered in kraft paper - it's all we had on hand at
the time. It's badly wrinkled in places. :)

Note that collimated display systems are not really usable or meant for
bubble canopy equipped airplanes. It won't be used with the F-15, but
we're looking at building both a single & dual seat cockpit that would
work within the 8ft diameter of the next version of the display.

The box is not louvered - you're seeing the ribs that make up the toroidal
shape that makes the screen. The ribs are 1/8" thick and spaced 3 degrees
apart. Like the mirror, its only a 60 degree wide test assembly.

Thanks David. We found there is nothing more undignfied than the sound of
grown men giggling like little girls. :)

Wayne has pics & video that he took with his camera and as soon as it's
available, I'll get it posted.

I'm going to try to do a walk-around in the next day or so with the room
lights up so you can see the position of everything.

Yes. We're going to start working on that this coming weekend. It'll be
an 8 foot diameter mirror. That's the largest we can make given that you
can't buy mylar in rolls wider than 56".

Wow, that's pretty amazing. I love my 37" monitor, but there is nothing like the size and depth perception of a good collimated system. I shall eagerly await the fancy version of which you speak in the video! :)

And are we going to make up a set of plans/shop bot components for this one
Gene?

I have these three lovely Proxima X350 DLP Projectors here gathering a lot
of dust. I doubt there's 20 hours on any of them, and each has a remote and
a ceiling mount assy. They would be perfect for a set up like that me
thinks.

I too have 3 projectors (with image warpers) and instructions from my boss
to build a wraparound for the new J41 sim.

Probably not. We still need to sit down and figure exactly what
patented methods will end up in the final project. Unlike Copyright,
there's no fair-use provision with patents. At this point all we can
really do is show off the end-result, but not produce plans that would
allow anyone to do it.

What resolution are they? Do you know if they can be mounted vertically
(beam pointed straight up) without burning them out?

As a patent holder Gene, I can tell you they aren't worth the paper they are
written on 99% of the time. At least in this concept. You only need to make
an improvement to cabbage or over-ride the patent. (if there are any at all.
I suspect there are patents on the process and not the final result) You
have already exceeded that. You have developed a new process. Unfortunately,
by posting it to You Tube etc, it will not be patentable.

File a Caveat with the US Patent service in any case. It's 100.00.

I think the projectors would be very happy pointed up. Heat rises afterall.
What I like about them, is that they have a a solid metal housing.

Google:

Proxima X350

or try this:

http://www.projectorcentral.com/Proxima-UltraLight_X350.htm

for the specs.

The problem is that we could easily be bankrupted by attourney fees even
if they didn't win - we can't take the risk. Companies like CAE have much
deeper pockets than we do.

Holy crap! That price is insane! Wayne found some 1080p HD projectors
for under $800 a pop. We'll likely use those for the new build.

I asked Wayne. As soon as he gets back to me I'll post the link. AFAIR
he found it on Newegg.

That was the price when they first came out Gene. They are worth 500.00
each now tops. I'd let the works of them go for less, except, I intend to
keep them.

ahh, ok. I was a-feared you'd been taken. *laughs*

Those projectors should work pretty well. 800x600 is FAR too low. The
screen door problem is very noticable at that resolution.
