How many people here use 3D modeling tools and _don't_ use some kind of
auxillary input device along with the mouse?
I'm using a SpaceBall 5000 that I picked up a few years ago that's GREATLY
reduced the amount of wrist & arm stress I used to experience while
working with just the mouse alone.
There are a number of companies that sell the USB version of the SpaceBall
5000 and the newer SpacePilot. If you do any 3D modeling, I highly
recommend getting one of these things. The drivers are available from the
3dConnexion website (http://www.3dconnexion.com). Avoid the serial
version of the SpaceBall - the current driver has no support for them.
The Vista driver works with Windows 7 as well.

I use Autodesk Inventor 2010. I've wanted to get one of those for years.

Yeah, I need to actually proof-read every once and a while. *sigh*
That's supposed to be "...a number of companies on eBay...".
The seller I've purchased from before is:
http://shop.ebay.com/offleaseavenue/m.html?_dmd=1&_ipg=5 0&_sop=1&_rdc=1
He currently has a number of new and used SpacePilots - these are the next
generation up from the SpaceBall 5000. The newest from 3DConnexion is the
SpacePilot Pro, but those are still pretty expensive on the used market.

I've never used that model - it looks kind of tiny though. :)
FYI, if you're using Google SketchUp v8, you'll need to jump a hoop or two
to make a SpaceBall work with it:

Been using DesignCAD 3D for past 15 years, just a couple of days here and there each year,
I believe it can use a spaceball.
Last time I used a spaceball was on a unigraphics unix box late 90's. yes it is very nice to use.
Just don't use drawing programs enough to buy one, although the usb version might be worth while.
My problem with any of the drawing programs is I like entering the points themselves to define everything. Especially if it's something I'm trying to replicate in the drawing as opposed to just slapping some objects on the screen to create some kind of abstract art.

They added alot of plastic molding and sheetmetal options and it seems to run
smoother. but they are always making it better then the last.

Hehe.
How does Inventor 2010 compare to the 2009 version?

Hehehe. I love it because I don't need to use the mouse to rotate the
model. After doing that for a while "single-handed", it makes my wrist
and forearm hurt. If I kept at it, my fingers would get numb.

Yeah - it sure makes life more comfortable. Although I'd be a lot happier
with "thought entry".
I kinda look forward to the days of thought entry not just for some few handicap folks, but then I remember all those viruses out, and then I remember the movie runaway.
Then I'm like I'll deal with my slow fingers and limbs to intereact with the computer. Don't need my eyeballs seeing nothing but the blue screen of death and not anything else.
