I guess I don't understand it because it would so much easier using a
hydrualic Router ?

The problem isn't the method of cutting, it was the twist of the cutter I
was using.

The downshear cutter geometry is designed to apply downward pressure
against the part being cut. This helps with holding the part down.
During the cutting process this tends to pack the material chips into the
channel that's left behind by the cutter. This helps with vacuum hold
down like I use when cutting full sheets of material. The problem comes
with the e acrylic. The chips are not being thrown out of the cut and as
a result the cutter is hitting them again, cutting them smaller and
melting them due to the high friction.

An upshear or "O" flute cutter doesn't have this problem because it
"pulls" the material as it cuts it, throwing the chips out of the cut.

Had I used an upshear cutter (I don't have one at the moment), I would not
have had the re-melt problem I had with the downshear cutter.

Unfortunately the learning curve can be pretty expensive. I destroyed (as
in snapped in half) $40 worth of .062 2 flute cutters working out the feed
& speed for cutting aluminum when I was working on the IFF panel.

I'm going to talk to Fred at Centurion Tools today and see what he
recommends I buy for this acrylic job. His cutters are very high quality
and not nearly as expensive as the Onsrud line.

It's a dream machine, literally. I dream it up, it cuts it out. :)
Sometimes it actually works out that way for real. *laughs*

G,

A BJ Mk1

Many design Ideas that I have raided from many people around the world via
the internet all rolled into one, with my own design flare, T.L.A.R theory.

At the moment its planned to be a proof of concept machine, it works I'll
build a bigger BJ Mk2.

Its main reason is to automate all the repetitive bits that I need to cut
out for my wood/ply aircraft (CJ1 Corby Starlet) (wing / Fuselage) gussets
instrument panel and anything I can fit onto the bed.

Oh and the odd model aircraft, also I plan to produce custom instrument
panels for homebuilt aircraft as a one off thing.

Mk1 is planned for about x axis of 750mm y axis of 400mm and z axis of
150mm hopefully.

Mk2 double the size.

I'll send some pics off list in the next day or so

Regards

Ben

Any pics Ben?

I've just found out that we've bought what sounds very much like a pair of
shop-bot type gizmo's here. One is a router-style machine, the other is a
laser. Awaiting more info :)

That's cool. What are you going to use as the cutter motor? A router or?

Have you seen the stuff at Hobbycnc.com?

Keep in mind that you need a LOT of power to cut through plywood, let
alone metals.

You might want to build a plasma cutter head for your machine though. :)

Ryobi Router 400watt 30,000rpm to start with and sin wave chopper speed
controller to refine tool speeds hopefully, just need to work out how to
vary the speed with a output from the pc's parallel port , i can switch the
motor on and off with a spare output, but i would be nice to have the
computer dial in the desired tool speed automatically <wish list>

You might want to just build a speed controller that you can talk to via a
serial port. The 3 phase spindle on my 'bot is controlled by an RS-422
link. The max RPM is 18,000.

That happens when you get older... :)

The original ShopBot was a plasma machine. They haven't offered that
option in years though.
