I found this video on YT today and it shows the exact method I'll be using
for all the projectors for the F-15 and the other cockpits.

Great stuff.

Well Sir,

That is pretty damned cool. The KISS theory taken to the extreme.

You know, you wouldn't even have to bother tearing apart the monitor. Just
adjust the view of the lens so it doesn't go beyond the screen image.

I don't know what the fans were all about either. You don't need the light
on underneath so no heat there, and monitors don't have fans anyway.

Awesome in any respect.

I'll be on the look-out for an old transparency projector for sure.

Thanks for sharing that Gene.

Rick, I don't think you understand how it works. :)

The backlight of an LCD monitor isn't strong enough to project all but the
faintest amount of light through the lens system. By removing the LCD
panel from the case, you're allowing the incredibly bright light from the
projector to "be" the backlight. The fan is needed to prevent the
incredibly intense light from the projector from doing damage to the
delicate LCD panel.

He
I used this technique back in the "new born" days
It was a cheap way to make projection - but never as good as what you can
buy for money these day - so go for a real projector instead...

think I have a Picture somewhere -----

Ah ha.

I did wonder about the brightness and thought it was pretty amazing. Didn't
watch what he was doing close enough there I guess.

Still, a very novel idea.

hi, Gene

i'm betting this is a stopgap measure for you at best.

considering the investment in all the cockpit so far (including the
building & equipment), the visual system will not ( eventually ) be
compromised.

since your eyes spend most of the time staring at the screen, you
want this to be at least as good as everything else. in fact, that's
where i put most of my money first, because (at least for me), the
vast majority of the time is spent staring at the screen.

and yes, projectors are getting fantastic. there has been a
divergence between "computer monitor" projectors and those used in
home theater.

i've yet to tote the hi-def home theater projector into the sim to
see how it works.

anyone see one of those LED displays in action?? i'm wondering how
neat they would look in a glass cockpit, though i wonder if they will
be released in smaller formats.

Frank, what flaws did you see in the process? I know that a "real"
projector is the "right" way to go, but at $900 each for good ones, it's
not really practical. Especially when you consider that bulb replacements
can cost upwards of $300 each.

You'd be surprised at how much time I've spent avoiding spending money. :)

If I go to a "Fancier" system, it'll be something along the lines of these
guys: http://www.diyprojectorcompany.com/

They provide plans on how to build your own projector system using off the
shelf parts and regular LCD monitors. Lumen Labs is the primary vendor,
although they seem to be out of stock on a lot of the parts.

At some point Rob & I are going to build a 180 degree dome system as
described in this whitepaper: (it's 42MB)

http://local.wasp.uwa.edu.au/~pbourke/papers/graphite2007/gr aphite2007.pdf

When the dome is built, I'll be working with one of the FlightGear
graphics developers to have them add the pre-distortion to the image so
that it appears correctly when projected against the dome.
