Ah ha.
I did wonder about the brightness and thought it was pretty amazing. Didn't
watch what he was doing close enough there I guess.
Still, a very novel idea.

hi, Gene
i'm betting this is a stopgap measure for you at best.
considering the investment in all the cockpit so far (including the
building & equipment), the visual system will not ( eventually ) be
compromised.
since your eyes spend most of the time staring at the screen, you
want this to be at least as good as everything else. in fact, that's
where i put most of my money first, because (at least for me), the
vast majority of the time is spent staring at the screen.
and yes, projectors are getting fantastic. there has been a
divergence between "computer monitor" projectors and those used in
home theater.
i've yet to tote the hi-def home theater projector into the sim to
see how it works.
anyone see one of those LED displays in action?? i'm wondering how
neat they would look in a glass cockpit, though i wonder if they will
be released in smaller formats.

You'd be surprised at how much time I've spent avoiding spending money. :)
If I go to a "Fancier" system, it'll be something along the lines of these
guys: http://www.diyprojectorcompany.com/
They provide plans on how to build your own projector system using off the
shelf parts and regular LCD monitors. Lumen Labs is the primary vendor,
although they seem to be out of stock on a lot of the parts.
At some point Rob & I are going to build a 180 degree dome system as
described in this whitepaper: (it's 42MB)
http://local.wasp.uwa.edu.au/~pbourke/papers/graphite2007/gr aphite2007.pdf
When the dome is built, I'll be working with one of the FlightGear
graphics developers to have them add the pre-distortion to the image so
that it appears correctly when projected against the dome.
